The 8 Best ASUS Laptops to Buy in 2018

We've got the best computers to buy from this electronics powerhouse

Taiwanese electronics giant ASUS makes a wide range of products, but it has come to be known for its laptops due to their attractive designs and powerful performance. But where do you begin when buying your next computer? That depends on your priorities, of course. Whether you’re into gaming, on a budget or have a creative streak, ASUS has a laptop for you.

The ASUS F556 strikes a harmonious balance between beautiful design and impressive power, making it our overall favorite ASUS laptop. At first glance, you’ll fall for its icicle-gold metallic frame and just how thin it is, measuring 15 x 10.1 x 1 inches. Inside, it packs a 7th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, a 256GB solid-state drive and 8GB of DDR4 RAM, letting you boot up fast and multi-task with ease. It also boasts best-in-class connectivity with USB 3.0 Type-C, HDMI, and VGA ports, a 3-in-1 card reader and more.

Its 15.6-inch full HD display features a blue light filter, which essentially diminishes blue light levels by up to 33 percent, making reading easier on the eyes. If that’s not enough, its Li-Polymer battery delivers up to 700 charge cycles, roughly 2.5 times that of a Li-ion battery, and won’t deteriorate as fast.

Gaming laptops are basically in a class of their own. They are powerful for sure, but by no means subtle and that’s certainly true of the ASUS ROG STRIX. With a 7th-generation Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor and discrete GeForce GTX 1050 4GB graphics, it can play all the games you could want. It also has 16GB of fast DDR4 2400MHz memory, so you can multi-task without thinking twice. Perhaps most importantly for gamers, it comes equipped with a smart thermal design that lets you run the CPU and GPU at full speed without thermal-throttling.

The 17-incher is fairly sleek for a gaming laptop, measuring a thin 0.9 inches and weighing only 6.45 pounds. Its keyboard features RGB backlighting that splits into four zones, which can be configured separately or synchronized according to your preference.

ASUS continues to impress us with its budget devices and with this ASUS Flip C100, you’ll enjoy the versatility of a 2-in-1. It’s a sturdy, all-metal machine that is comfortable to type on despite its small keyboard. When you flip the screen past 180 degrees, the keyboard is automatically deactivated and your input changes to a top-notch touchscreen. And Amazon reviewers especially love its 10.1-inch LED-lit IPS display, which delivers a crisp and bright picture.

But it doesn’t just look good. Housing a Rockchip 3288-C quad-core 1.8GHz processor plus 4GB of DDR3 RAM, it’s impressively powerful compared to others in its price range. It’s battery life is also commendable, which, depending on how you use it, can last up to 12 hours. So while it’s a great buy for anyone on a budget, it also makes a trusty travel companion.

For something slightly more substantial than the ASUS Flip C100, but still conveniently portable, we recommend the ASUS ZenBook UX330. Measuring 12.7 x 8.7 x 0.5 inches and weighing 2.6 pounds, it’s travel-friendly, but still packs a performance punch with an Intel Core i5 processor and a responsive 256GB SSD with 8GB of DDR3 RAM. (Unfortunately the memory isn’t expandable.) That means that unlike most other portable devices, it can power heavy-duty photo- and video-editing apps running on Windows 10.

The UX330 features a beautiful 13.3-inch anti-glare 1080p display with wide viewing angles of up to 178 degrees. Its backlit keyboard is much improved from the previous model and in the upper-right corner of the touchpad, you’ll even find a fingerprint sensor, which makes logging in with Windows Hello both faster and safer.

Whether you’re in the market for a 2-in-1 because of its portability, versatility or good-looking design, the ASUS Chromebook C302 is hands down our favorite. With a 360-degree hinge and a 12.5-inch Corning Gorilla Glass, full-HD touchscreen, you can use it in four modes: laptop, tablet, stand and tent. If productivity is important for you, you’ll especially love its comfortable, full-size keyboard, which is reminiscent of a MacBook’s and has 1.4mm of key travel, not to mention minimal key float.

Don’t be fooled by its sleek design, though: the C302 houses a powerfully fast Intel m3 core processor with 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM, which lets you boot up in about 3.5 seconds. On top of that, you’ll get 100GB of free storage on Google Drive for two years. It’s a clear fan favorite on Amazon, with one reviewer calling it “THE Chromebook to get.”

While some computers on this list are ideal for travel or media streaming, if you have serious work to do, look no further than this ASUSPRO P2540UA-AB51. With a speedy 7th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and 1TB of 5400RPM HDD, it’s a productivity powerhouse. Design-wise, the P2540 has a very professional look with a brushed black body and a 15.6-inch anti-glare FHD display.

As far as security features go, it has an embedded TPM Security Chip to protect your data on a deep hardware level, plus a biometric fingerprint sensor to safeguard your files and make logging in a snap. On top of it all, its battery will last you a solid nine hours, and it has a removeable battery pack to you can swap in a new one if you’re running low. Workaholics will especially like the ASUS Business Manager software, which the company describes as “a one-stop manageability and security solution specially designed for small businesses without a managed IT environment.”

While a sleek design is all good and well, sometimes you need a laptop that can stand up to a long day’s work. The ASUS Chromebook C202 is just that, with a spill-resistant keyboard and reinforced rubber wrapped edges to absorb impact. It scored best in its class on a drop test, withstanding falls up to 3.9 feet without damage.

Its 11.6-inch, 1366 x 768 anti-glare display makes it easy to use even in the sunny outdoors and it has a 180-degree hinge for easy viewing. On the inside, it packs an Intel Celeron N3060 processor with 4GB of DDR3 RAM and 16GB of Flash storage, which should be ample for most computing tasks. It doesn’t have a CD or DVD drive, but that’s pretty standard on a rugged machine.

Designers delight! This ASUS VivoBook S 510 has a screen so beautiful you’ll never want to stop working. The 15.6-inch full HD display has just a 0.3-inch NanoEdge bezel, giving it a 80 percent screen-to-body ratio and making all other laptops look old. It also boasts 178-degree viewing angles, so that colors remain crisp even when viewed from the side. On the whole, the laptop weighs just 3.7 pounds and measures a slim 0.7 inches.

Running editing software can be quite a burden on a computer, but this ASUS handles it while staying cool, thanks to its Intel Core i7 processor, plus 8GB of DDR4 RAM and 128GB M.2 SSD + 1TB HDD. It also has an ergonomic, backlit keyboard to keep you on task during late-night design sprints. So although it’s no secret that most creatives opt for MacBooks, this Windows 10 laptop will give them a run for their money.
